Does your fleet software already track recalls? Usually not.

Many GPS and telematics fleet platforms advertise 'maintenance alerts' or 'predictive maintenance' — reminders based on mileage or calendar schedules, or vehicle-reported diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). That's genuinely useful, and it's also a different data source entirely from an NHTSA safety recall campaign. A clean DTC reading doesn't mean a vehicle isn't under an open recall, and a maintenance-due reminder isn't a recall notice.

Two different alerts, two different sources

Both matter for a well-run fleet. Neither substitutes for the other.

Maintenance alerts

  • Typically mileage- or calendar-based service reminders
  • Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): vehicle-generated engine/system fault codes
  • Self-defined by the platform or the vehicle’s onboard systems
  • Not sourced from NHTSA or manufacturer recall-campaign data

NHTSA recall campaigns (BulkRecalls)

  • Sourced from NHTSA vehicle decoding and recall-campaign data
  • Matched by year, make, and model across your saved inventory
  • Scheduled daily rechecks so new campaigns surface automatically
  • A dedicated review workspace and CSV export for campaign records

A clean maintenance dashboard isn't a clean recall record.

If your current fleet platform's 'maintenance' or 'health' module doesn't explicitly name NHTSA, recall campaigns, or safety recalls as a data source, assume it isn't checking for them. BulkRecalls is built specifically around NHTSA campaign data, matched to your saved vehicle list, as a complement to whatever maintenance tracking you already run.

Before you decide.

What is a DTC, and how is it different from a recall?

A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated by a vehicle’s onboard computer when it detects a fault — it reflects the vehicle’s current mechanical state. An NHTSA recall campaign is a manufacturer or NHTSA-issued safety action tied to a vehicle’s year, make, and model (or specific VIN), independent of whether any fault code is currently present.

Could my fleet platform already cover recalls without saying so clearly?

It’s possible but uncommon — check the platform’s own feature pages or support docs for an explicit mention of NHTSA or recall campaigns. If it only describes mileage schedules or DTC-based alerts, it is very likely not checking for recalls.

Do I need to replace my maintenance software to use BulkRecalls?

No. BulkRecalls is a separate, focused workspace for recall-campaign research. Bring the same VIN list you already use elsewhere; the two tools track different things side by side.
